Housewarming: Notions of Home from the Center of the Universe

BRIC is pleased to present Housewarming: Notions of Home from the Center of the Universe, the first exhibition of the 2013-14 season and the inaugural exhibition presented in BRIC Arts | Media House, BRIC’s new 40,000-square-foot multidisciplinary arts and media complex located at 647 Fulton Street in the Downtown Brooklyn Cultural District. Housewarming will be a celebratory show, introducing the public to BRIC’s new 3,000-square-foot gallery space with its monumental interior stoop, while exploring the concept of “home” from a number of broad vantage points. Eight of the 12 artists featured in the exhibition will present works commissioned by BRIC; three of the works in the show are site-specific. Curated by BRIC’s Director of Contemporary Art, Elizabeth Ferrer, Housewarming will be on view October 3 through December 15, 2013, with a special opening reception held on October 9 from 7-9pm.Artists Njideka Akunyili, Sonya Blesofsky, Margaret Reid Boyer, Drew Hamilton, Katarina Jerinic & Chad Stayrook, Esperanza Mayobre, Abraham McNally, Garry Nichols, Keisha Scarville, Vargas-Suarez Universal and Nathan Wasserbauer explore the idea of “home” as a flexible, variable concept revealed in a myriad of ways, and influenced by an individual’s history and personal accumulation of places. The works exhibited will range in scale and medium – from Vargas-Suarez Universal’s monumentally scaled, digitally printed mural to be mounted on the façade of BRIC House and spanning over 30 feet, to the intimate, wall-mounted sculptures of Abraham McNally measuring, for the most part, less than one foot. For more information, visit BRICartsmedia.org
