No Magic at Vinzees Magic Fountain, But Plenty of Balloons

The family-friendly restaurant is now open.

At Vinzees Magic Fountain, carnival fare has found a more permanent home.

While there's no big-top tent, burgers and fries are served up alongside balloons, pizza and milkshakes, all in a family-friendly atmosphere. The only thing missing is the stilt walkers.

Indeed, the owners said they wanted to create a family restaurant that is all about fun.

"We want to make sure everyone comes in, has a great meal, and leaves with a smile on their face," said co-owner Joe Cumbo.

Vinzees Magic Fountain was an idea hatched by Cumbo and two other partners, all commodities traders with extra time on their hands.

The demand was there for a fun and casual place where anyone, "whether you're in a suit, or sweatpants," can come and get a great meal, said Cumbo.

"There was really nothing in the neighborhood, everything is upscale," he said.

Vinzees, named after what the neighborhood kids would call Cumbo's father, Vincenzo, is a family restaurant.

"Carroll Gardens used to be, and still is, a family oriented neighborhood," said Cumbo.

The building on Court Street and First Place has been in the Cumbo family for more than 35 years. Cumbo's parents ran The Magic Fountain, an ice cream shop that closed last year. It was the partial inspiration for Vinzees, which also serves deliciously rich milkshakes.

"We kept Magic Fountain in the name for tradition," said Cumbo. "For my parents and the old timers who remember."

When we stopped in, the air outside was muggy and hot, and the strawberry shake, thick and ice cold, hit the spot. The cheeseburger, for just a little over $5, was a bargain. We're not talking anything fancy here -- just a big, juicy burger on a soft and flavorful bun.

There were kids running around and eating pizza, teenagers grabbing a bite on lunch break and adults stopping in and grabbing burgers to go.

Most of the foods served are sourced locally and cooked in-house, and nothing is frozen.

"There's a lot of heart and soul in this place," said Cumbo.
