Bio: Kristen V. Brown has been a Park Slope resident for over two years, but before that spent her time living around the world—from California, to West Africa and New Delhi. Brown received her degree in Journalism, Middle Eastern Studies and Philosophy from New York University, and spent time studing Arabic in the small Moroccan mountain town of Ifrane. She has written for publications including The NY Daily News, NY Press, amNew York, The Brooklyn Paper and Curve Magazine. When her face isn't buried in a newspaper, she enjoys spending her time making jam, kayaking and reading science fiction novels. She is a huge fan of public radio, most notably WNYC's Radiolab.

Your Beliefs
At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible because human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal their beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable. This disclosure is not a license for editors and writers to inject their beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that their beliefs are on the record will cause them to be ever mindful to write, report and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you ever see evidence that they failed in this mission, please let us know.

Politics
How would you describe your political beliefs?

I am a liberal independent.

Are you registered with a certain party?

I am registered as an Independent.

Religion
How religious would you consider yourself?

I was baptised Lutheran as a child, but not raised in a religious household. I consider myself to be open-minded and spiritual, but not necessarily religious.

Local Hot-Button Issues

What do you think are the most important issues facing the community?

Land use, the Atlantic Yards development and education issues are constantly on the minds of most Park Slope residents. There is also ever-mounting concern about the environment, historical preservation and bike lanes.

Where do you stand on each of these issues?

I am particularly against the Atlantic Yards development—I believe it was a poor decision to stage a major sports arena in the center of historic, residential Brownstone Brooklyn. I believe it is an even bigger tradgedy that the community will likely not even see the benefits of the project for the better part of two decades.
