Stories that will Amaze You: Resilience is at the Heart of It

Local Artist, Megan Karlen, felt so fortunate after Sandy that she spent the next 2 weeks volunteering throughout Brooklyn. "Day after day I kept meeting people who were simply incredible: resilient, compassionate and forward-thinking; I was simply in awe of them."

"I wanted to spotlight some of the stories that were particularly poignant; stories about the people who were surviving the mess that Sandy left. So, I created a FB page called TheRoadsEdge: Experiencing Sandy."

"One of my favorite stories was of Martha. She was 85 years old who traveled over 2 hours by bus back to Coney Island to see if her building had any power. She couldn't call beforehand because no one had power so day after day she'd get on the bus and ride 2 hours each way to check for herself." (Read the whole story here.)

"Or, Manny who walked provisions up to his family on the 17th floor of their building 3 times and THEN went out to vote. There was story after story like these."

"I also wanted to do more so I created art cards with inspiring words on them. I wanted this energy of perseverance to have a very long life. You can still purchase them on my site and 10% of proceeds go to Sandy Relief Funds."

Through the cards and donations from an art show Ms. Karlen had during the clean up effort, she has donated over $700.
