The 9th Annual Columbia Waterfront District Halloween Party and Parade

Halloween spirit in a spirited neighborhood

Eight years ago my husband and I moved from the heart of Carroll Gardens right over the BQE to a neighborhood that some called Red Hook and others called South Brooklyn and others just considered part of Carroll Gardens, but many now call the Columbia Waterfront District.

We discovered that the short walk over the highway trench and a distinct waterfront identity gave our new neighborhood just the smallest sense of separation from the larger community - and that we loved its tight knit feel. You can't walk down the street without running into people you know and all around are interesting community and cultural organizations that help make our little neighborhood a wonderful place to live.

As our children were born we became more involved in neighborhood activities including one a group of volunteers had begun a couple of years earlier- an annual at Mother Cabrini Park/the Urban Meadow, both on President Street between Columbia and Van Brunt Streets.

This year the 9th Annual Columbia Waterfront District Halloween Party and Parade is on Sunday, October 30 from 10 a.m. - Noon. The parade is being led, as it was last year, by the Underground Horns jazz band and an FDNY fire engine. There will be treats and hula hooping in the Urban Meadow next door and fun for everyone! All are invited. The photos accompanying this article show this celebration from 2004-2010.

Our neighborhood has changed a good deal since we moved here - in fact , but its diverse spirit remains. Happy Halloween everyone!
