Reminder: Fireworks Are Illegal In NY, NYPD Offers $1,000 Reward

This Fourth of July, remember that it is illegal to even possess them, even if you don't set them off.

 

This is the last time we'll say it: It's illegal to possess fireworks in New York State, even if you don't set them off.

This Independence Day, the NYPD is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of people possessing or distributing fireworks.

Further, if cops find someone using, transporting or selling illegal fireworks, they can be arrested, their cars taken away and their businesses closed, according to the NYPD. 

So far 56 people have been arrested for illegal fireworks and an additional 33 people got summonses. In addition, 12 cars found to be transporting illegal fireworks have been confiscated.

People should call 311 if they know of anyone using or selling illegal fireworks. 

In 2011, the NYPD made 579 seizures of assorted pyrotechnics—an estimated 6,500 pounds or three tons. They were destroyed in "controlled burns" in the Bronx, according to the NYPD.
