Heat Wave Could Cause Brownouts in Areas of Brooklyn

ConEdison teams have reduced voltage by 5 percent in some neighborhoods to combat the strain caused by air conditioners.

Hot enough for ya? As the heat wave continues to roll through Brooklyn, temperatures are expected to reach between 98 and 100 degrees on Saturday, according to the weather report.

With many escaping the blaze outside for cooler spaces indoors, there is the possibility of brownouts due to exhaustive energy use, reports Reuters.

As New Yorkers continue to pump air conditioners, some areas of the borough have strained the grid.

To combat the issue, ConEdison has reduced voltage by 5 percent in the following areas of Brooklyn as a precaution: Crown Heights, East Flatbush, East New York, Ocean Hill, Brownsville, Williamsburg, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick and Greenpoint, Flatbush, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Prospect Heights, Canarsie, Flatlands, Mill Basin, Old Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, Georgetown, Coney Island, Seagate, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, Sheepshead Bay.

"Air conditioning doesn't lose power in a voltage reduction," the article said. "But incandescent lights, hot water heaters and some motors are slightly affected."

As yet, residents are not being requested to take special precautions. For more information from ConEdison, click here.
