3 Best City Beaches Via Subway

From Barclays Center, you can get to the beach by train in 30 minutes.

This article was written by Amy Sara Clark.

Sure it's hot, but that doesn't mean you have to stay inside.

Tonight after work, put on your suit, get on the subway, and in about 30 minutes you'll be jumping in the waves.

Here are my picks, in order, of the three best beaches to get to from Carroll Gardens:

1. Brighton Beach – Less than a 5-minute walk from the subway, with lifeguards, bathrooms and nice waves, why go further? Plus, since it's in the neighborhood of Little Odessa, stay for dinner at one of the boardwalk cafes after your swim. Load-up on the ultra-greasy but delicious street food and super cheap fruit on your way home. If you want a less-crowded beach, get off one stop later at Ocean Parkway.

Time: 22 minutes on the B train, 29 minutes on the Q.

2. C
oney Island – Stay on the Q train a few stops further and you're at Coney Island. Go there if you're looking for the old-timey carnival scene and make sure to ride the Wonder Wheel for great views of both ocean and city skyline.

Time:
40 minutes on the Q train, or take the B to Brighton Beach and change for the Q.

3. Rockaway Beach
– Once an under-the-radar secret of NYC surfers and beach aficionados, the open-ocean strip has fantastic waves. A few years ago it was discovered by the Williamsburg hipster crowd, so now you can have an organic smoothie after your swim. On weekends, you can also take the NYC Beach Bus from the Barclays Center.

Time:
44 minutes via the the A Train at Hoyt-Schermerhorn to Beach 90 St.
