Giants Prevail, Locals Celebrate

Football fans reveled at bars, house parties, and even in the streets Sunday night.

The Giants beat the Patriots 21-17 at Super Bowl XLVI Sunday night after a thrilling 4th quarter that had fans of both teams on the edge of their seats in the final minutes. From fancy bar stools to Jennifer Convertible couches, cheers were heard erupting across Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill when Big Blue won.

Not all Carroll Gardeners stayed in the neighborhood to celebrate. Court Street and 1st Place resident Matt Rodbard spent most of the game in Manhattan.

"I went to a friend's apartment in Nolita until the third quarter," said Rodbard. "We did a potluck-style dinner—mostly party snacks like 7-layer dip and Buffalo chicken dip. But a friend in town from Hawaii made Spam Musubi [Spam sushi]. Do not hate it until you try it!"

A self-described Detroit Lions fan, Rodbard cut out of his party after the 3rd quarter to watch the finish in Brooklyn. "The ride home between the 3rd and 4th quarters was the emptiest I've ever seen the F train," he observed. "Sort of calming."

But once returned to the better borough, that surrounding energy quickly changed in the 4th quarter. Afterward, Rodbard added, revelers hooted into the night just outside his apartment.

"Likely on their way to —a little less angry tonight I am sure," he noted.

Further down on Court Street, J. Khiu watched most of the game at home alone. "The plan was to watch the halftime show, then the second half," she said, admitting, "I don't understand the game so 'watch' really means just that as opposed to follow. It's a good thing there's a scoreboard!"

Nevertheless, Khiu still got swept up in the final moments: "It was more the nail-biting last four minutes that did it for me than the win itself," she said. "I'm very impressed with how much 10 seconds can count."

At Warren Street and Fourth Avenue, Boerum Hill resident Tommy Cho had chosen to host friends with his roommate.

"Most of our guests were rooting for the Giants, a few for the Pats," said Cho. "When they finally won, some Giants fans were relieved, others started hitting people with the pillows on the couch and knocking over snacks. Then we came to the bar."

Having then celebrated at until 1:00 a.m, Cho paused, and at last a few of the night's spirited cheers were claimed.

"Our guests were the ones screaming outside after the win," he said.
