Smashed Volvo Prompts Community Meeting On Safety

A weekend crash at corner of Kane St. and Henry St. has gained the attention of local officials.

A grey Volvo parked at the corner of Kane and Henry streets was rear-ended over the weekend, prompting some local residents to drive for safer roads and arranging a community meeting on the topic to be held this coming Monday, February 6.

The owner of the Volvo, Maureen Hogan, responded to Patch to relate the string of events that took place.

"My understanding is that around 11 p.m. on Friday our car was hit by two cars," said Hogan. "One that went through the red light on Kane, and a car service vehicle that was moving too quickly down Henry to stop.

"The [car service] hit the other car at the intersection, forcing it to travel the 20 some feet down Kane and into our parked car and a nearby tree. Our car is basically where it was, moved forward from impact just a smidge. But because it is a Volvo, witnesses say the car parked in front of us was badly damaged as well. There are no skid marks. A dog walker 'curbing' their pet, or a bike rider would have most likely been killed."

Hogan, who represents the Kane Street Block Association said that the group has tried in past to have speed bumps created near P.S. 29, which is located at that intersection.

"There has also been considerable talk about other traffic calming measures in area," said Hogan, who left a note on the trunk of the damaged Volvo calling the community to gather for a meeting on the subject.

The sight of the vehicle along with the note acted as a lightning rod over the weekend, according to Hogan, who said many neighbors discussed the cluster of accidents near P.S. 29, and "near misses" involving children.

A meeting is planned for Monday, February 6th at 7 p.m., 155 Kane St between Cheever and Henry streets.

Officer Paul Grudzinski, the 76th Precinct's community affairs liaison, has confirmed that he will discuss recent accidents at the meeting, as will Chris Hrones from the Department of Transportaion.

Downtown Brooklyn Neighborhood Coalition Co-founder Jo Anne Simon, Brooklyn Councilman Brad Lander and Assemblywoman Joan Millman have been notified of the meeting as well.
