Local Kindergarten Wait Lists Relatively Low

PS 29 and PS 58 exhibit a 3- and 4-applicant overflow, respectively.

More than 2,400 children in New York City are on kindergarten wait lists to get into their local, zoned public schools, the Department of Education revealed Friday. But of that total, the number of children who were shut out of elementary schools and topped out at 3 and 4, respectively.

While area parents of those who were denied immediate entry are undoubtedly frustrated and anxious, the low number of waitlisted applicants poses less of a challenge than most across the city.

"In fact, the combined waitlist of both schools is less than that of in Gowanus—a school the DOE designated as so 'underutilized,' that it warranted a proposed co-location of a Charter School there just one year ago," noted Jim Devor, President of CEC-15, to Carroll Gardens Patch.

At the opposite end of the DOE's list, Sunset Park families zoned for PS169 and PS 94 face more than 100 children each.
