The Roots of Brazilian Samba

St. Francis College Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice is sponsoring a lecture and demonstration on the roots of Brazilian Samba dance and music. The demonstration, organized by Professor Deinya Phenix for her Principles of Sociology course, will feature live drumming and focus on the roots of Brazilian Samba, music, dance and movement. Special guests will discuss how the dance and musical traditions of Candomble in the Ketu (Yoruba) and Angola traditions combined with indigenous and Portuguese influences in Brazil to create Samba, an internationally celebrated feature of Brazilian culture.
