Editorial Influence on News Symposium

In this panel, titled "Is the New York Times Good For Democracy?", Michael Tomasky (Editor, Democracy: A Journal of Ideas) & William McGowan (Gray Lady Down) will discuss whether or not the publication still fills its original role in society.

Event organizers elaborate:

"The Times still produces impressive journalism. But its reputation and credibility, say its critics, have been eroded of late by a string of journalistic scandals that have led a significant segment of the public to see the paper as a preacher of left-liberal, politically correct orthodoxy. The Times’ editorial page has always set and followed an agenda. The problem, some argue, is that its editorial viewpoint has bled over into the news reporting itself. Its critics argue that, on issues from terrorism to immigration, the Times has sacrificed both its journalistic professionalism and its once valuable role as a forum for democracy."
