Your New Mayoral Front-Runner: Bill de Blasio?

Public Advocate is third Democratic candidate to hold a lead in the race.

New York City's mayoral race has already had plenty of twists, turns and intrigue — not to mention plenty of talk about Anthony Weiner's private life.

But the new poll released Monday shows New Yorkers something they haven't seen before: Bill de Blasio in the lead.

A Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday gave de Blasio a six point advantage over Christine Quinn in the race for mayor, 30 percent to 24 percent. Bill Thompson was in third place with 22 percent, followed by Weiner in a distant fourth at 10 percent and fading fast.

"A few weeks ago, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio looked like an also-ran. Today, he's the leader of the pack, and a winner in the runoffs. Follow the bouncing ball, folks. This line-up keeps changing," said Maurice Carroll, of Quinnipiac.

The public advocate's campaign manager Bill Hyers said he was thrilled but not surprised by the numbers.

"Whether we are ahead in the polls or behind, Bill de Blasio's message has always been clear," Hyers said. "He is the only Democrat who will break from the Bloomberg years by raising taxes on the wealthy to invest in universal pre-K and after-school programs, ending racial profiling, and fighting to save community hospitals."

In a potential run off with the other three top Democrats, the poll found that de Blasio peformed best against Weiner, but still managed to top both Thompson and Quinn by large margins.
