Weiner Drops to Fourth in New Mayoral Poll

'Carlos Danger' releases letter urging supporters to stick with him.

The latest Quinnipiac Polling Institute release has some bad news for "Carlos Danger" — his serial sexting has likely cost him a place in a mayoral runoff in September.

The poll, released Monday, showed that Anthony Weiner's base of support had cratered over the last week. It was revealed last Tuesday that Weiner continued sexting young women after his resignation from Congress for getting caught doing the same. Since then, his supporters are leaving him in droves, Quinnipiac revealed.

The poll also found that 53 percent of Democrats think Weiner should drop out of the race, compared to 40 percent who think he should stick around.

"With six weeks to go, anything can happen, but it looks like former Congressman Anthony Weiner may have sexted himself right out of the race for New York City mayor," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "And with Weiner in free-fall, it begins to look like a three-way race again."

The numbers are now much more favorable for City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has 27 percent support among Democratic voters. Public Advocate Bill de Blasio has enjoyed a boost, earning 21 percent support.

Former Comptroller Bill Thompson is close on de Blasio's heels with 20 percent support, and Weiner comes in fourth at 16 percent support.

That represents a 10-point drop for Weiner in just a week.

On Monday afternoon, Weiner sent an e-mail to supporters, begging them to stick with him despite the bad news.

"I knew that revelations about my past private life might come back to embarrass me. I never hid from that possibility," Weiner wrote. "But, I waged this campaign on a bet that the citizens of my city would be more interested in a vision for improving their lives rather than in old stories about mine."

Weiner concluded the e-mail by indicating that he doesn't plan to go anywhere — and also asked supporters to donate to his campaign.
