Stopped in Their Tracks: SUNY Halts Ambulance Service to LICH

As of Thursday, all vehicles will be rerouted to University Hospital or the location of the patient's choice.

LICH will no longer receive ambulances at its emergency care unit, according to a release from officials.

As of Thursday, June 20, all emergency vehicles will be diverted from Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill to University Hospital. SUNY Downstate, which has made multiple attempts to close or sell the struggling hospital over the last year, blamed the cuts to service on lack of proper staffing.

"Our primary concern is always patient care and safety, and our chief medical officer has determined that, given the exodus of doctors and other medical staff from LICH, continuing to send emergency patients there is no longer in the patients' best interest," stated the release.

University Hospital is located 15 minutes away from Long Island College Hospital.

Should an emergency arise, how do you feel about this cut to ambulance services?
