State Senate to Host LICH Hearing Tuesday

SUNY recently voted to cut ties with struggling hospital.

Tuesday morning, a group of nurses, doctors and health care professionals will make the three-hour drive to Albany as part of the fight to keep Long Island College Hospital open.

They'll be joined by patients and families who have been served by the hospital to make an appearance in the capital in advance of the latest hearing on the facility's mandated 2013-14 sustainability plan.

The hearing, headed up by state Sen. Kenneth LaValle, of Suffolk County, will address the recent decision by SUNY to cut ties with LICH, leaving the hospital without an operator.

Registered Nurse Julie Semente mentioned the hearing during an interview with Patch last week.

"LICH's nurses, doctors, staff and community neighbors will be at the hearing to testify and help the Senators realize the importance of preserving LICH as a full service teaching hospital for the wide area of Brooklyn that it serves," Semente said. "Before we leave Albany, they will understand that anything less at LICH is just not acceptable."
