Spitzer Retains Big Lead in Latest Numbers

Former governor holds nearly 20-point advantage in Comptroller race.

With less than a month to go before the Democratic primary for New York City Comptroller, Eliot Spitzer has staked himself to a big lead, Quinnipiac says.

The former governor has a 19-point lead over Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in the latest poll, despite the fact that more than 60 percent of city voters say they're embarrassed by his candidacy.

"Everyone seems to be against former Gov. Eliot Spitzer except the voters," said Maurice Carroll, of Quinnipiac. Carroll noted that Spitzer's support among men and black voters was particularly strong.

"Spitzer is all over the TV screens, building on his better name recognition and leaving Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in the dust."

Pollsters noted that voters weren't thrilled about Spitzer's lascivious past, but weren't bothered enough by it to prevent them from voting for him.

Spitzer leads Stringer 56-37 among Democratic voters, with the majority on both sides saying they had already made up their minds and were unlikely to be swayed by continued campaigning.

The poll was administered to nearly 600 Democratic voters in New York City.
