Monitoring devices will be installed near public schools across five boroughs.

Earlier this week, Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined Senate Majority Coalition Leader Klein, Transportation Commissioner Sadik-Khan and NYPD Chief of Transportation James Tuller to pass new Speed Camera Legislation.

  • For the first time ever, the City will be able to install speed cameras at up to 20 locations.
  • Pictures taken by those cameras will identify speeding vehicles and be used to ticket vehicle owners.
  • The locations where cameras will be installed are within a quarter-mile of a school and gun-tested to show that at least 75 percent of drivers drove faster than the speed limit.
  • The Bloomberg Administration has made big strides in improving traffic safety, cutting traffic fatalities in the city by 30 percent during the past decade.
