Smith and Ninth Street Subway Station Opening Derailed!

Thanks to delays in the $32 million project the station will not open until Fall 2012.

The straphangers around Smith and Ninth Street will be stranded without a train until the fall.

The reopening of the Smith-Ninth Street F and G subway station, which was slated for the end of this month, will be delayed until fall 2012, according to the MTA and Craig Hammerman, the district manager of Community Board 6. 

"The consolation is that they're not really taking anything new away, the area has gone without it for some time—although I'm sure riders will view it differently," Hammerman said at a CB 6 meeting on Wednesday night.

The station was closed on June 20, 2011 for a $32 million renovation, part of the Culver Viaduct Rehabilitation Project, a $275.5 million engineering and construction effort to rehabilitate the elevated steel and concrete Culver Viaduct structure, which both the F and G train lines run along and has distrupted service at .

The Smith-Ninth Street station renovations, which is being done in coordination with the Fourth Avenue Interlocking Signal Modernization, will include a new and expanded street level control house, new architectural metal panel escalator enclosure and rehabilitated stairs and platforms, an MTA spokesman said. The station will also have new lighting, public address and CCTV systems. 

Originally the station was supposed to open at the end of March with only G train service. Now the station will stay closed until the fall, but F and G service will resume at that time, a representative of the MTA said.

For now, straphangers will have to rely on or walk from the Carroll Street or Fourth Avenue-Ninth Street subway stations.

This is such an important subway station. The work really needs to be wrapped up.

What's the story? What are the excuses for the delays? Is it a safety issue? Did they simply underestimate the time it would take?

i'm beyond pissed about this....but i guess not completely surprised. i live RIGHT at smith/9th, and as i moved in last february have never actually set foot on a northbound F at this station, there was only G's at that time. so needless to say i have been anxiously awaiting re-opening. initial posts said "march 2012" then it quickly became "spring 2012" and now fall. my ugh was heard from space.

Come on. This station clearly needed lots of help and I see no problem getting it don't right at the expense of 6 months. Their initial schedule estimates were aggressive to say the least. The carroll stop is only a couple blocks up the street. While this certainly is inconvenient for residents of Red Hook, they've always had the $h_t end of the stick. I live right around the corner and look forward to its reopening, but can handle the delay.

The reopening, which is pushed back to fall 2012, is due to delays in construction. Although Red Hook residents are physically removed from public transportation and that fact comes with living there, it is something that can be improved by better B61 service and opening Smith-9th St station as soon as possible. This delay must hurt the neighborhood incredibly and I hope for their sake that the station actually opens as scheduled. What other modes of PT could help the area?
