Brooklynites celebrate the beginning of the Festival of Lights

The first night of Hanukkah brought hundreds of people to the front of the Kings County Supreme Court Building for a menorah-lighting ceremony.

Rabbi Aaron L. Raskin of Congregation B'nai Avraham led the event and introduced speaker Marty Markowitz, the Brooklyn Borough President.

The event also featured a concert by children’s entertainer Uncle Moishy, a broad array of refreshments, and a giant menorah nearing thirty feet in height.

State Senator Daniel Squadron (D-District 25) rode in a cherry picker to light the candles. Talking to a reporter before the event, he said, “It’s a great community event for a great community here in Brooklyn. Plus, it’s got to be the tallest menorah out there.”
