LICH Rally Will Protest Wall Street, For-Profit Hospital Takeovers

In Brooklyn, nurses will rally tomorrow at noon in Cobble Hill.

Grab your picket signs and head for the hill—Cobble Hill, that is.

With just four days until the end of the legislative session, New York State lawmakers have introduced a proposal to let Wall Street and for-profit hospital chains take over Brooklyn hospitals. But NYSNA nurses and other activists say such takeovers are not the silver bullet solution they appear to be—and they plan to protest the proposal at noon on Wednesday, June 19, outside of LICH.

"They cut services. They cut staff. Wait times go through the roof. And patient deaths spike — according to a study from Duke University hospital," wrote Julie Semente, RN, in an e-mail to Patch.

"Join us for our Statewide Day of Action to stop the Wall St. takeover," she went on. "In Brooklyn, we’ll rally at Noon at LICH, 339 Hicks St. Statewide, we’ll be calling our lawmakers to tell them to say NO to a Wall Street takeover."

The legislative session will be over by Thursday. Now is the time to act, she says.
