Kelly Blasts NYPD Inspector General Proposal: Report

Police commissioner and Mayor Michael Bloomberg say creation of NYPD watchdog would make city less safe.

City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg in his criticism of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn’s plan to create an inspector general for the NYPD, NY 1 reported.

Last week, Quinn said there was “broad support” in the City Council to create a watchdog position for the city’s police force.

Last summer, Council members proposed legislation to institute the position, which would be a non-police officer appointed by the mayor who would independently oversee the NYPD and have subpoena power.

Kelly told NY 1 that the creation of the position would be a “cause for concern.”

“I think putting in another layer of so-called supervision, or monitoring, can ultimately make this city less safe,” he said.

During a ribbon-cutting Tuesday for a modernized Central Park Precinct station house, Bloomberg took aim at the current crop of mayoral candidates.

“What we don’t know is what they will actually do to reduce crime,” said Bloomberg, who is opposed to creating an NYPD inspector general. “We don’t even know if it’s a goal. And I believe the people of this city have a right to know that their mayor will keep fighting to reduce crime. The question is whether the people running for mayor believe that.”

The City Council is expected to pass the inspector general legislation next month.
