Hamilton Ave. Pedestrian Bridge Closure Extended

Repairs are taking longer than expected.

When the state Department of Transportation announced in July the for repairs, which is basically the only safe way to cross between Red Hook and Carroll Gardens,

“We were completely caught off guard by this sudden news," wrote Community Board 6 district manager Craig Hammermanin a letter to the DOT at the time.

It now appears the bridge will be closed longer than originally anticipated, too. According to information in this month's newsletter from the 76 Precinct in Carroll Gardens, "It does not appear the DOT will finish the refurbishment" by Oct. 10, the projected date of completion.

A main issue with the bridge closure was child safety. The bridge is used by children who attend the Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies and the Brooklyn New School on Henry Street.

The 76 Precinct has added additional school crossing guards and sent traffic agents to the intersection of Hamilton Avenue and Clinton Street, to assist pedestrians.

State DOT spokesperson Adam Levine has not responded to an inquiry as to when the bridge will reopen.
