Carroll Gardens School, Library Among Participatory Budget Recipients

More than 2,800 residents voted in Councilman Brad Lander's program this year.

Three Carroll Gardens-area projects were among the winners of Councilman Brad Lander's 2013 Participatory Budgeting program this weekend, including a local school and the neighborhood library.

After more than 2,800 residents of District 39 came out to vote for their favorite projects, six recipients were chosen to receive funding from the $1 million program. Of those, bathroom renovations at PS 58 - The Carroll School will receive $110,000 and computer upgrades at The Carroll Library will receive $75,000.

“I am amazed by the turnout and cross-community collaboration we saw over the last week,” said City Councilmember Brad Lander in a release. “After one of the more trying years in our city’s history, it would be easy to divide into factions and work against each other for funding for our corner of the city. But New Yorkers are showing a better way forward and are working together to make the tough decisions that make all of our communities stronger.”

Nearby in Gowanus, the 3rd Street Green Corridor: New Trees, Less Runoff project, which seeks to install 10 trees with enhanced pits to improve storm drainage, and add shade and beauty from Bond Street to 3rd Avenue will receive $170,000 as well.
