Boerum Hill Rezoning Goes Before Marty Markowitz

Mile End Delicatessen dominated the conversation

At the Boerum Hill Rezoning Land Use Public Hearing Tuesday night, Borough President Marty Markowitz had more to say about the neighborhood's most popular restaurant -- -- than about the zoning proposal.

"The young people love that place!" he bellowed. "It's not a traditional deli, I like a traditional deli."

"It's a generational thing," he added.

Before the talk of smoked meat and pickles, Markowitz listened to the proposed rezoning plans for the neighborhood.

Lish Richard Whitson from the Department of City Planning went through the plans block by block, and Markowitz had no objections.

"It's a beautiful neighborhood," he said, adding that he and his wife had looked at homes there.

Markowitz will make his decision after he receives the . Next, the plan goes before the City Planning Commission and finally, the City Council.

The Boerum Hill rezoning was an idea hatched inside the community, led by the Boerum Hill Association. There has been little resistance along the way, and no one turned out at the public hearing to speak for or against the proposal.
