Bill Thompson Sr. to Mediate SUNY, LICH Fight

Staff and hospital operator in midst of struggle over plan to close local medical facility.

Former city council member and attorney William Thompson Sr., father of a current city mayoral candidate, will be trying to broker an agreement between SUNY Downstate and Long Island College Hospital, the Daily News reported.

SUNY, the hospital's operator for two years, has announced plans to close the hospital — saying the facility is broke — but the staff and local residents are fighting to keep it open.

Thompson will try and mediate an agreement between the university and the hospital's medical staff, who have been in a heated fight over SUNY's decision to close the medical facility since it was announced.

SUNY was also ordered by a judge on Thursday to account for every transaction — including money, property, you name it — that it has been transferred out of the hospital since taking over its operation in 2011. When SUNY took over the facility, it also took on its nearly $200 million in debt.

SUNY must provide their account to the state court before Aug. 5.
