Assemblywoman Millman Rallies Against Success Academy Cobble Hill

In an afternoon press conference, Millman says why early childhood education is what's needed.

Assemblywoman Joan Millman and former Deputy Schools Chancellor and President of District 15 Carmen Farina a couple of weeks ago, and today Millman gave a press conference in support of it.

She joined parents, education leaders including District 15 Community Education Council President Jim DeVor and City Councilmember Steve Levin, to speak out against the Department of Education proposal to co-locate the charter at 284 Baltic St.

Millman and Farina are proposing a pre-kindergarten and kindergarten program for District 15. Millman said she opposes the charter school because it might threaten the growth of the existing schools in the building, particularly the School for Global Studies, which is undergoing a federal school improvement plan that Millman and others hope will increase student achievement and thus increase enrollment.

"The neighborhood elementary schools are high achieving and their pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes are overcrowded," said Millman. "And because the Center would only serve children in two grades and would not expand, it would not threaten the growth of the existing schools.”
