He made the announcement on his campaign website at midnight

Nearly two years after the Twitter scandal that forced his resignation from Congress, former Rep. Anthony Weiner officially has announced his entry into the race for New York City mayor, reported Politicker.

After weeks of speculation, Weiner has laced up his sneakers, announcing he’s running with a new video posted on his revamped campaign website, which went live midnight on Wednesday.

“Look, I made some big mistakes. And I know I let a lot of people down. But I’ve also learned some tough lessons,” he says in the two-minute video. “I’m running for mayor ’cause I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it my entire life. And I hope I get a second chance to work for you."

While the scandal, which involved the former congressman tweeting pictures of his penis to extramarital love interests, might give many voters pause, it has increased his name recognition, reported Politicker.

And with more than $4 million in his campaign account, and the latest Quinnipiac poll placing Weiner second in the race behind Christine Quinn, his entrance has the power to turn the race on its head.
