A 48-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car Friday night at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Clinton Street, police said.
Martha Atwater was passing the front of 200 Clinton Street when a 53-year-old man traveling north on Clinton Street in a black 2011 Honda Ridgeline lost control of his car and struck her.
EMS responded to the scene and brought Atwater to Long Island College Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said the driver remained on the scene and no criminality was suspected.
The accident occurred only a day after a Kings County Supreme Court judge signed a temporary restraining order halting the SUNY Downstate Board of Trustees from moving forward with its plans to close LICH, pending a further hearing on March 7.
The restraining order comes on the heels of an announcement by SUNY Downstate President John Williams, stating that he had formally filed a proposal for closure with the NYS Department of Health on Tuesday.
