Police Blotter: Graffiti, Assaults and a Case of Stolen Electricity

Crime reports in Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and Red Hook from the 76th Precinct

Two Vandals Cuffed for Tagging DOT Signs

Two graffitos were arrested at the corner of Hicks Street and Atlantic Avenue, on Monday, Nov. 12 at 8:58 p.m., cops said. According to police, one man was observed placing the tag “SCCT” on a Department of Transportation sign at the intersection by arresting officers. Another was seen marking “WANT” on another sign nearby. Upon inquiry, the first male was found in possession of stickers and other graffiti instruments. Joseph Winter, 37, and Uzhida Kazuhiro, 29, were arrested and charged with criminal mischief, making graffiti and possession of graffiti instruments.

Man Arrested for Armed Robbery

On Nov. 8 at 10:45 p.m. a man was arrested for a robbery that took place in October. While in custody, Jose Santiago, 17, from Gowanus, admitted that he was in possession of a firearm at the time of the crime. Items stolen included a cell phone casing and an iPhone worth $400, said police.

Man Charged With Assault After Hitting Two Officers

While being arrested for possession of a controlled substance, an individual assaulted two officers, police said. On Nov. 2 at 1:35 a.m., the male resisted arrest by flailing his arms and struck two officers in the face, causing swelling and lacerations. Carl Whitaker, 29, was arrested for criminal possession of controlled substance and charged with assault and resisting arrest.

Attacker Escapes After Punching Man Multiple Times

After engaging in a verbal dispute an unknown man punched a victim multiples times in the head and face, then fled, according to police. On Sackett St. at Court St. on Monday, Nov. 5 at 8:50 p.m. the exchange is alleged to have taken place. Wanted is a male, 27, 6 foot, weighing 180 lbs and wearing a blue baseball hat and blue coat.

Toyota Becomes Target of Crime on Hicks

At the corner of Hicks and Warren Streets, at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, a man was observed by officers inside a vehicle with broken glass, trying to remove property from inside. Upon inquiry, the individual was found to have an extensive arrest history. Ernesto Vazquez, 45, was arrested outside of the grey 2010 Toyota Tundra and charged with burglary and criminal mischief.

Downstate Allegedly Steals Electricity from EMS Station 

EMS has reported to the 76th Precinct that between Oct. 29 and Nov. 12, someone ran an electric cable from their location at 622 Court St. and ran it to 615 court street, but were not given authority to do so, said cops. The man, 33, who reported the incident said that EMS would be suing Statewide for stealing electricity.

Rite-Aid Shoplifter Arrested for Taking Playtex Items

On Friday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. an individual inside Rite Aid was observed by store sec removing property and putting it in her pocketbook, according to police. Upon alerting cops, they arrived at the scene and arrested Carmen Donatiu, 49, for stealing various Playtex items. The total was valued at $32.12

Kids Vandalize School Lavatory

A woman reported to police that kids damaged two boys’ bathrooms at New Dawn Charter High School, located at 242 Hoyt Street. On Friday, Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m. it was determined that criminal mischief had taken place at the school, where damaged bathrooms were found on the 2nd and 3rd floor. There are no known suspects at this time.
