Pedestrian Struck by Car on Fourth Ave.

The pedestrian sustained serious, but not critical injuries.

A vehicle struck and hit a pedestrian Monday evening as he was crossing the infamously speedy Fourth Avenue.

The pedestrian was hit at around 6:35 p.m., and transported to Lutheran Hospital with injuries that were “serious, but not life threatening,” according to the Fire Department. Police said that he ran across the middle of the roadway near Union Street, against the light.

Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives, happened by the scene minutes after the accident. According to witnesses White spoke with, the pedestrian tripped and fell while crossing the street. A bicyclist on the scene provided aid to the wounded pedestrian until medical assistance arrived, according to White. He said the cyclist was covered in blood from helping the pedestrian.

The speeding traffic conditions on Fourth Avenue have long been a concern for local residents, including the Park Slope Civic Council. Some have argued that the avenue's traffic conditions prevent it from developing as an integrated part of the neighborhood.

The pedestrian’s current condition is unknown.
