Partial Building Collapse on Fourth Ave.

Scaffolding falls onto a nearby building.

Two floors of scaffolding collapsed at a brand new 11-story building under construction on Fourth Avenue this afternoon.

The collapse occurred at 426 Fourth Avenue near Eighth Street around 2 p.m., with fallen debris crashing into the roof of an apartment building on Eighth Street and littering the area around the construction site.

A Fire Department official said that no one was injured in the incident and that the roof of the neighboring residential building appears to have only suffered cosmetic damage.

Nonetheless, they have evacuated the apartments while awaiting a complete assessment from the Department of Buildings.

The Fire Department was also waiting for the construction project’s scaffolding company to come and secure the remaining structure.

“A couple of pieces of scaffolding are still hanging from the rear of the building,” said FDNY Battalion Chief McDade. “They’re in danger of falling so the scaffolding company has to come and cut them away.”

A resident of the evacuated building was sitting on her front stoop while her daughter played with colored chalk on the sidewalk.

“We were just in the house and we heard the big boom,” she said. “All the metal pieces fell in the back yard.”

The Department of Buildings has not yet determined the cause of the collapse.
