NYPD and OWS Partnered to Keep Red Hook Safe After Storm

Though other areas of the city saw spikes in burglaries following the storm, Red Hook has remained safe.

While hard-hit areas like Coney Island and the Rockaways saw a surge in burglaries following Hurricane Sandy, Red Hook hasn’t seen any remarkable spike in crimes, and Occupy Wall Street activists may be to thank, according to the New York Post.

An unlikely coalition between NYPD, OWS activists and local non-profits has kept storm victims safe in Red Hook, says the paper.

An unnamed source told the paper, "This crisis allowed us all to remove the politics and differences we had to do our job, and come to the aid of the people. We all rose to the occasion."

OWS activists set up tents to distribute food, clothes and medicine in Coffey Park, and cops were on hand to help. NYPD also lit up Red Hook with lights when the neighborhood lost power.

Occupy activists – using the name Occupy Sandy for their relief efforts – have been delivering food and supplies to storm victims since the day after the storm hit.
