The landlord of the building, John Mullen, said he received a call around 6 p.m. from his maintenance crew who told him what had happened.

"This is insane," he said.

Mullen said his tenant is an artist, and the apartment doubles as an art gallery. He added that he did not believe his tenant was the victim.

Due to construction across the street, neighbors didn't hear gunshots.

"I seen lights and I seen an ambulance," said Irene Gonsalves, who lives next door. "This block is usually quiet."
