Firefighters Battle Underground Blaze in Red Hook

Smoke reported emanating from location at Hicks and Luquer streets.

Firefighters battled a blaze at a commercial property at 700 Hicks St. earlier Sunday.

A report of smoke emanating from the location, an oil tank maintenance company between Luquer and Nelson streets, was called in at 11:40 a.m., according to the New York Fire Department.

Officials later determined that the smoke was caused by a fire in an underground fuel tank. 44 firefighters from nine units responded to the scene.

The fire was under control at 12:38 p.m., the FDNY said.

No injuries were reported.
