Cops: Cobble Hill Homes, Cars Remain Target For Crime

Officers of the 76th Precinct have issued 40 letters to residents as reminders to lock up property.

The 76th Precinct's special initiative "Spot It To Secure It" has already made an impression the neighborhood, according to Capt. Jeffrey Schiff.

"We really went aggressive in April," he said at the monthly council meeting, describing how officers patrolled every block of Cobble Hill over the last 30 days. During that time, cops found myriad building entrances ajar, windows open and unsecured stairwells with recently delivered packages. In each of these instances, officers would close the doors or windows.

Additionally, many cars in the area were recorded with bikes, wallets, laptops, iPads, tools and cameras in plain view on top of the seats, he said. "We're targeting most of our efforts in Cobble Hill because it's the leader of petty larceny," said the captain.

After all of the locations were noted, 40 reminder letters were sent out from the precinct to the respective car and homeowners, reminding them to secure their belongings and protect their households.

"Everybody wants community policing? This is as close as you're gonna get," said the captain. "While my officers are on your block, nothing's going to happen."

In fact, the precinct is down eight larcenies for the month, and down 23 for the year.
