Brooklyn South Sees Homicide Spike

Local precincts' crime spike bucks citywide trend.

Patrol Borough Brooklyn South, which includes Windsor Terrace, is the only area in the city to see an increase in homicides so far this year, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In COMPSTAT reports compiled today by the paper, south Brooklyn has seen a 23 percent increase in homicides committed over 2012, bucking a downward trend set by the rest of the five boroughs and north Brooklyn.

North Brooklyn, by comparison, actually saw a nearly 32 percent decrease in homicides through mid-July. It should be noted, however, that North Brooklyn still has more total homicides this year, 39, than South Brooklyn, with 37.

In the report, Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, a police spokesman, said that the increase is deceptive because the 2012 homicide numbers for the patrol borough were historically low.

He also said the number of shootings in the area have actually decreased this year, a positive trend for an area in which police are hoping to quell violence.
