Apartment Fire on Pacific Street

There are no reported injuries

A fire at 260 Pacific St. Tuesday evening forced residents in their bathrobes and cats in carrying cases out onto the city streets. No one was injured.

The fire broke out in an apartment on the fourth floor of a large, five-story building in Boerum Hill, a fire department spokesman said. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Milagro Colon lives just above the apartment that was on fire.

"My friend lives downstairs," she said, sitting on a chair in her nightgown, holding back tears. "She's my best friend, she's in Florida, her son is sick."

The Fire Department received the call at 6:43 p.m. and by 7:04 p.m. the fire was under control, said the spokesman. 12 units responded to the scene, and 60 firefighters fought the blaze.

Kira Silver, another resident, came home to find her street filled with fire trucks and onlookers. She was allowed to go inside and rescue her two cats, which were in carrying cases beside her on the sidewalk.

"I came back from the laundromat and they were smashing the windows," she said.
