Top Ten Songs About Brooklyn

Perhaps America's most famous borough, Brooklyn has inspired musical tributes from virtually all genres. Here's a list of some of the best.

One of the many great things about Brooklyn is the depth of passion it inspires. The borough, perhaps America's most famous and a perennially popular theme in popular culture, has inspired musical tributes from virtually all genres, especially hip-hop, which, by necessity, has gotten short shrift here. Given the huge and diverse field, it's a fool's errand to try to rank songs about Brooklyn, but fool I am.

"Joey" by Bob Dylan. Although not entirely about Brooklyn, it is an ode to one of its most famous/infamous inhabitants. It references Red Hook and President Street. And it has to be one of Dylan's most moving, cinematic (and controversial) songs.

Totally agree. 'Joey" was my #11 or 12th pick! Glad you brought it up.

"What Brooklyn At", an early Biggie and Tupac live freestyle? "Brooklyn's Finest", by Jay-Z and Biggie, "Brooklyn Girls by Train" by Soul Coughing, "Big Ball in Brooklyn" by Flatt & Scruggs, and the most egregious omission of them all, "Brooklyn Zoo" by the Old Dirty Bastard. The irony is that this comes only one day after the seventh anniversary of his untimely demise.

It's amazing how famous Brooklyn really is. I have been born and raised in Brooklyn all my life for 48 years. I left for Florida for 2 years back in 1988 and I had to come back. When I was down there I bought a personalized front plate for my car (you didn't need 2 plates) that said Brooklyn Born. Every where I go people just know and say either "are you from Brooklyn or New York?" Love it. Coolest place on the planet.

Anonymous nailed it with the Avett Brothers. Also, Mos Def "Brooklyn". And Gregory Alan Isacov "Raising Cain".
