"This, that, and the other..."

The Pointing Finger                             Featured in the Canarsie Courier - "Brooklyn's oldest weekly newspaper                                                         "This, that, and the other..."                                                                               by Dr. Stephen Finger                 At a recent College Opportunity Summit, President Obama spoke of how the educational playing field is unequal, that it's not fair and is getting worse. Sasha and Malia, for example, attend the PRIVATE Sidwell School where they get lots of "this, that and the other..." which is often not available to children in other, i.e. public, schools.         Did this mean that the president was finally going to end his long standing opposition  to school  vouchers, which would allow poor children to get the same quality education that he was able to provide for his own children?          Since the president is determined to 'do what has to be done' and plans to use his 'phone and pen' if congress won't cooperate, a couple of suggestions,         First, maybe use that 'phone' to call congressmen and women, as well as state legislators, to explain that you've had a change of heart and that you want them to start passing school voucher programs which you will support, that you are no longer going to be intimidated by the teachers' unions and will do what's right for the kids regardless of the consequences, financial or  otherwise. As each regains consciousness, repeat that 'no' you weren't kidding and that  'yes' it's really you.          Next, use your 'pen' to sign all the voucher legislation, which will easily pass with your support. Since Republicans are already on board, and have been for years, you will only have to convince the Democrats. They're your buds. It'll be a snap.         So, can the pen actually become 'mightier than the teachers' union?' Well, if man can walk on the moon...   Dr. Finger practices medicine (Otolaryngology) in Brooklyn. He ran for Congress in '06 on Libertarian and Republican lines. Visit our blog at: www.ThePointingFinger.Blogspot.com [Please feel free to pass along to anyone you think might be interested.
