The Porch

It is said 500.000 years ago man developed introspective consciousness.that we became self-aware -Ramachandran- This quality separates us from all other animals and sets in motion the ability to tell stories...
The Porch
Perched on a precipice some 100 feet above sea level sat the deck of my childhood. Forget HD or 3D this was unadulterated reality. The deck started small in the early 70's and through my life grew and grew.It grew so big it became a multi leveled wrap around porch.Bird houses ,humming bird feeders, flower pots retractable awnings, barbeque,a telescope a 50 foot hand made flagpole ,and last but not least a tee for driving golf balls. You could tell this was the heart of my home. From the magnificent warmth of sun rise to the waning of the afternoon sun ever altering view was impeccable. Even at night we watched the billions of twinkling stars and swatted at the same amount of mosquitos.Sometimes the full moon looked so big and bright as to be unreal. If you had enough blood you could watch the heavens all night. From our vantage point hundreds of square miles of un spoiled Ocean sprinkled with all shapes and sizes of Islands lay at our feet. You could watch the weather rolling in and out like the tide.Once in a while you could get lucky and witness one beam of sunlight pierce through the clouds and dance like a jewel on the water.Even in the winter white plums of sea smoke would meander from the Ocean water as extremely cold air passed over the warmer waters surface.Looking out over the Atlantic from the porch I can hear my father chant his favorite weather mantra. Pink sky at night sailors delight ,Pink sky in morning sailors take warning. Gulls and Osprey and now even Bald Eagles ride the wind in there never ending search for a seafood dinner. it seems to me many young people are concerned with the quantity of life.I am satisfied with the quality and on the Porch , I'm content.
