Parent Talk: Taking The Kids Out of School For Vacation

What would you take your kids out of school for?

This past week I took my children out of school for a trip to Los Angeles. When I first booked the trip, I was a bit torn about taking them out of school for a vacation. However, I quickly weighed the pros and cons, and realized that going would be an incredible experience for them. I believe kids learn so much from travel and it truly expands their view of the world.

Recently, I wrote an article on reasons to take your kids out of school for vacation for Aol Travel. The article sparked a huge debate in the comments section. Some  agreed that taking the kids on a trip and out of school is okay at times. Others felt differently.

And so, I’m asking you:

Would you take your children out of school to travel? If not, when is it appropriate to do so?

I did the week before you did! I believe it's fine for certain, special opportunities that come along every blue moon. The fact that it's much cheaper to travel when it isn't "break" is a huge factor - at least for me.

I kept my kids out of school this week for a day so they could spend time with their cousins who live in CA. Sometimes it's worth it. As long as the kids don't start to think it's OK to play "hooky" from school....

I've always felt travel is a life lesson for our kids so I'd definitely take them out of school when necessary (up till 3rd grade at least - I guess....)
