Parent Talk: Exercise Classes for New Moms

Working out with your baby

The other day, as I walked past , on my way to the gym, I noticed a bunch of new moms taking an exercise class in the park. They had their babies in strollers, lined up along the gate, in the shade. When I entered the gym, I saw a flyer for an excercise class for new moms at .

As a mother of two, I know how hard it is to get back in shape once you have a baby. When my kids were babies, there were only mommy and child yoga classes in the area. I just used the childcare at the gym, so I could work out. When I walked past that group of women working out together, I found myself wishing there were mommy and baby gym classes when I was a new mom. It would have been nice to work out with other women who were also trying to rebuild their stomach muscles and who wanted to get back in shape.

Can anybody recommend a postpartum exercise class? Does your gym have an excellent childcare room? We’d love to hear about all kid-friendly gyms and classes in the area!

Look forward to hearing all of your suggestions!

Alison, I work at Element Natural Healing Arts as the events and classes coordinator, and it just so happens that we are currently running a Post-Partum yoga series beginning next week. There isn't a drop off for the kids, but the class doesn't start til 6:30pm, so there's a chance for partners to be home in time for Mom's to get out the door! The listing for the class is here on Patch: http://carrollgardens.patch.com/events/post-partum-yoga. The 4 week workshop is actually built as a semi-private session and limited to four people so that women can get the real attention they need. Rachel Stark is the instructor (who some of you may know from Body Elite that was mentioned here). The specific issues that occur after childbirth are addressed so that they have something to take away with them for home practice or to bring to other yoga classes. We run this workshop periodically, and would love to open it into a drop in class if we had enough request for it! Thanks! Hope this helps some of your readers!

When he was a baby, I did what you did and took my oldest to Body Elite a few mornings a week just so I could leave the house! They had a great babysitting service, as does my current gym, Elite Fitness on Union. It was worth the couple of extra bucks to put my baby in a safe place so I could work myself awake after all those sleepless nights!
