Soul Fever
[1970] Deluxe

Reminiscent of early Mavis Staples, this soul singer's obscure funk will kick the boogie out of more mainstream alternatives.

2. Swimsuit
S/T

"Equal parts scrappy and soft," this 2011 effort by Speaker Tree Records' pop group maintains lots of jumpy drumbeats and melodic harmonies. Easy to sing along with!

3. Beach Boys
Pet Sounds
[1966] Capitol Records

The eleventh studio album by California's unofficial ambassadors of beach-rock is a testament to everything fun, eclectic and catchy.

4. Mind Spiders
Meltdown
[2012] Dirtnap Records

This lo-fi, dark-wave punk album is full of oversized Texan heart. You can't help but get caught up in its organ-led balladry and over-the-top songwriting.

5. The Promise Ring
Nothing Feels Good
[1997] Jade Tree Records

Happy, bouncy songs, yes? But not a throw-away tune in the bunch! Listen and love.
