FOOD TRUCK RALLY!!!

As I was making pancakes a couple of weeks ago, I got a call from my dear 9-year old nephew, Alexander, who lives in New Jersey. Alexander is a real foodie, just like me. We watch food shows as if they were a spectator sport. Well, Alexander was calling to tell me that there was going to be a food truck rally on Sunday in Brooklyn, in Prospect Park and wasn’t that close by to where we lived??!! Alexander suggested that I go onto the website right away so we could review the list of trucks that would be participating. And so I put the pancakes on hold and did as he said. We didn’t realize that this food truck rally thing had been going on for months and it would be ending in October. We made a date for the following Sunday.

When Sunday rolled around, my husband informed us that he had to work all day. The weather was a little iffy. My sister suggested we do it another time. Alexander wasn’t having it. We had made a plan and we were going to stick with it. So they drove in from the burbs, picked up my kids and me and we headed directly up Union Street to Grand Army Plaza. I thought the place would be packed and that we wouldn’t be able to find parking. I was wrong. We found a spot in no time, not even a block away. And then we hit the rally. It turned out to be a veritable smorgasbord of food trucks.

We tried almost everything. With my youngest nephew’s stroller as home base, we all took off in different directions (with one of us staying with the baby at all times, of course). We had lobster BLT’s from the Red Hook Lobster Pound, empanadas (the best I ever had) from Nuchas, kimchi tacos from the eponymous Kimchi Taco Truck, grilled ham and cheese from The Milk Truck, pierogis from Old Traditional Polish Cuisine, dumplings from Rickshaw Dumpling, pad siew from Mamu Thai Noodle, and Philly cheese steaks from Phil’s Steaks. The kids also had a bluebery slushy from Kelvin Natural Slush Co.  And then we bought a bag of treats from The Treats Truck to take home. We also brought home kielbasa/pierogi combos for my mom and my husband. The man in the Old Traditional Polish truck was nice enough to sell me a huge loaf of rye bread since it was nearing the end of the day.

As we chowed down hovering around the stroller, what I could not believe was how fresh and delicious everything tasted. The hot food was really hot; the cheese steaks were actually steaming.

All I can say is WOW and thank you, Alexander, for such a great idea. Just when you think you’ve had it all, you find something else to be excited about in Brooklyn, this one just a hop, skip and jump away. Another fine Brooklyn food experience!
