NYC Residents Give Thumbs Up to Mayor’s Plastic-Foam Ban

A recent Quinnipiac University poll shows that while 51 percent of New York City voters oppose Mayor Bloomberg’s ban on large sugary drinks, 69 percent approve of his proposed ban on foam food and drink containers.

"Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed ban on plastic foam take-out containers looks like his most popular public health initiative so far," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"Even Staten Islanders, who have not been too receptive to other so-called 'Nanny Government' initiatives, approve of this one because they still live with the remains of the Fresh Kills Landfill."

The poll also found the ban on large-sized sugary drinks is harder to swallow among black voters, who oppose the ban 60 - 38 percent. White and Hispanic voters are divided.

Women are divided on the big drink ban, with 48 percent in favor and 49 percent opposed. Meanwhile, men oppose the ban 54 - 44 percent.
