Brooklyn, NY. January 20, 8pm, Roulette presents The Whammies. This all-star combination features critically acclaimed improvisers from the Chicago, Boston and Amsterdam improvisation scenes, in particular 70-year old Dutch drum icon Han Bennink. The focus will be on legendary soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy’s early compositions from the 1970’s, a particularly fruitful period during his life in Paris. The line-up is Jorrit Dijkstra (Amsterdam/Boston), Pandelis Karayorgis (Boston), Jeb Bishop (Chicago), Nate McBride (Chicago), Mary Oliver (Amsterdam), and Han Bennink (Amsterdam). The group plays colorful renditions of well-known Lacy tunes such as Bone, As Usual, and Dutch Masters, and some of his more conceptual and experimental works such as The Wire, Ducks, and The Precipitation Suite. Violinist Mary Oliver joins the quintet for a selection of compositions and improvisations.

"Far from a dry recital, this was well-listened, deeply collaborative music" [...] "Lacy would have been pleased." (Simon White, JazzTimes).

Good god, she's been here forever! Just say no thanks and move on. She's harmless.
