Carroll Gardens Voters Guide: 2013 Election Day

Your guide to election day in Brooklyn.

Election Day is Nov. 5, and it's a big one in NYC as voters will elect a new mayor for the first time since 2001.

Along with the mayoral race, there are a number of names you will see on your ballot when you head to the polls Tuesday. Here's a look at what to expect on your ballot.

New York City Mayor

  • Bill de Blasio - D
  • Joe Lhota - R
While there will be a number of names on the ballot for NYC Mayor, the two main candidates are Democrat Bill de Blasio and Republican Joe Lhota.

City Council

District 39 (Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Columbia Waterfront, Gowanus, Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Kensington, and Boro Park.)
  • Brad Lander - D
District 33 (Boerum Hill)
  • Stephen Levin - D
District 38 (Red Hook)
  • Carlos Menchaca - D
Menchaca unseated two-term incumbent Sara Gonzalez in the primaries.

District Attorney
  • Kenneth P. Thompson - D
  • Charles J. Hynes - R
Longtime Brooklyn DA Democrat Charles Hynes was defeated by newcomer Ken Thompson on the Democrat ticket during the primaries. With no Republican candidate, it appeared Thompson would run unopposed. However, Hynes decided to run on the Republican and Conservative lines at the urging of party leaders.

Public Advocate
  • Letita James - D
James won the Democratic runoff earlier and will not face opposition from a major party.

Comptroller
  • Scott Stringer - D
  • John Burnett - R
This race received the most attention when ev-Gov. Elliot Spitzer ran on the democratic ticket but was defeated by Scott Stringer. John Burnett runs on the Republican ticket. A Republican has not won the Comptroller's job since 1941.

Brooklyn Borough President
  • Eric Adams - D
Democrat Eric Adams will be running without a major party opponent.

Voters will also vote on Supreme Court Justices and local Civil Court Judges. There are six New York State Ballot Proposals as well, most notably Proposal 1 which is the authorization of Casino Gaming. Click here for a look at all proposals.
