Temporary Speed Bumps for a Hicks Street Intersection
Residents complained about the dangerous intersection at Hicks and Kane streets, and now the DOT will install a temporary speed bump.
After complaints from Cobble Hill residents, the Department of Transportation announced that a temporary speed bump would go up on Hicks Street, near a dangerous intersection at Kane Street, says the Brooklyn Paper.
The stretch of Hicks Street that has locals worried about safety has two lanes of northbound traffic and one lane of southbound traffic, separated by an overpass above the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The Paper says that nearby residents are worried about the speed of motorists coming off of the highway (sometimes hugging the curb), and because the overpass’ tall fence makes it hard for pedestrians to see when a vehicle is coming.
The intersection already has a light and a crossing guard for children walking to and from school, but the Paper says that residents who met with Department of Transportation officials last week requested speed bumps and mirrors near the intersection, too.

A study looking into permanent speed bumps on Hicks Street (as well as other nearby crossings, like Henry and Kane streets and Henry and Baltic streets) would take months, but a DOT spokesperson told the Paper that the agency will look into extending the sidewalks on Kane and Hicks streets and in the meantime, will provide a temporary speed board.
